ICT

The ICT unit offers to the RBCS department a high-quality support for whatever concerns the ICT. The main resonsibilities of the office are:

  1. maintaining the RBCS computing and network infrastructure,
  2. supporting researchers and staff on all hardware and software issues, 
  3. providing IT consulting services for the configuration of new setup (both experimental and infrastructure),
  4. designing, developing and maintaining web applications and services to support research as well as infrastructure activities,
  5. helping the researchers with the requirement analysis process and the technical specification writing of more complex software. Such software may be developed internally or outsourced.

The ICT unit offers a wide range of services and web applications to its users. Both external programs and custom solutions are provided and Open Source solutions are always preferred to the alternatives.


The basic infrastructure includes more than fifty virtual machines running on VMware and Proxmos.


The virtual machines host a wide range of basic services that include (but are definitely not limited to) a Mail Server, a VPN server, a SVN server, an Active Directory server, a Print server an Antivirus server and a Backup server.

Other services offered to the RBCS users include a shared data repository (based on Owncloud) and an account manager (a custom solution).


On the RBCS intranet some of custom applications are a PHD Career manager, an Experiment Subject manager and a Device (including the well-known iCub) Booking manager.

Public applications include several websites (BlindPADAbbiI Move UCntActuators) and an Experiment Data manager.
