Post-Doc Opening in Humanoid Technologies: Humanoid and Human Centred Mechatronics Lab

The Department of Advanced Robotics at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), an English-language research Institute, is looking for an international well motivated full-time postdoctoral research fellow that will have a key research role on the area of mechanical design and control of new humanoid platforms.

This position is funded by the European project WALK-MAN (www.walk-man.eu). This innovative project, carried out in partnership with four leading universities and research institutes, aims to advance humanoid design and control to allow these robotics platform to operate in unstructured environment, thus demonstrating high tolerance and robustness under strong physical interactions with the surrounding space.  WALK-MAN is funded by the European Commission, under the FP7 –ICT  programme (GA n. 611832).

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team  and will work on the development and control of humanoid systems integrating novel actuation and sensing components and control technologies.

We are looking for highly motivated, outstanding scientists with a background and PhD in Robotics, Mechanical or Control Engineering and an excellent, well established publication record on mechanical design and/or control of humanoid robots. Previous work in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

  • Design of compliant robots and actuation.
  • Design of articulated legged systems with customised sensing and actuation.
  • Design of Robotic articulated arms, end effectors and hand.
  • Whole body control, balance and push recovery stabilizers.

Proficiency in hardware design with a proven portfolio of practical designs, excellent hands-on practical skills and/or strong competences in humanoid robot control are essential.

The research will be conducted within the Humanoid & Human Centred Mechatronics Lab led by Dr Nikos Tsagarakis.  International applications are encouraged.
