Post-doc position in light-matter interactions in semiconductor nanostructures

The Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CBN@UniLE-http://cbn.iit.it/) in Lecce is activating a procedure for the selection of n. 1 Post-doc position  to work in the framework of the national project “MAAT”  (PON R&C 2007-2013 -  n. 713/Ric. 29/10/2010 –project’s title: Molecular NAnotechnology for HeAlth and EnvironmenT “MAAT”; Nanotecnologie molecolari per la salute dell'uomo e l'ambiente; project’s code PON02_00563_3316357; CUP: B31C12001230005; PI: Prof. Giuseppe Gigli )

The successful candidate will deal with theoretical modeling of metallic nanostructures in which plasmonic resonances would couple strongly with organic and inorganic semiconductors, with the aim of realizing efficient light localization for novel plasmonic devices, to the limit of single photon effects.

The Advanced Photonic Group at CBN is currently aiming to recruit one talented, energetic, strongly motivated and experienced young researcher. The recently born institute is equipped with state of the art laboratories for material growth and processing, spectroscopic characterization and transport measurements.

In particular, the Advanced Photonics Group is working on the study of all-optical devices for signal processing, which is increasingly getting a huge interest due to the limit reached by electronic components in terms of heat dissipation capacity and energy consumption. Moreover the fast data rate and wide bandwidth of photonic signals compared to their electronic counterparts see the need for all optical processing that do not require hybrid electronic/optical conversion elements. In this context the use of particles made by strongly coupling light with matter (polaritons) show the advantage of having very strong non-linearities while keeping energy losses at minimum and yet maintaining all the properties of photonic signals.

The successful candidate will work independently, under the supervision of experts in the field, to model new samples and devices for the study of novel effects and physical phenomena observed through the strong light-matter interaction in semiconductors. The particular scope of this project is to realize optical based devices where the strong light-matter coupling is observed in ultra-subwavelength volumes. The implementation of revolutionary polariton-based devices is at the forefront for the realization of low consumption, highly efficient, dissipation free optical chips.
