Italian research and robotics join forces in rehabilitation and welfare

soft-hand-IITToday a joint project between INAIL-The Workers Compensation Authority and IIT has been signed for the development of an exoskeleton for human locomotion and an advanced prosthesis for hand and wrist.

The President of INAIL Massimo De Felice  and the President of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Gabriele Galateri, finalized an agreement for an important scientific collaboration aimed at developing rehabilitative robotic technologies and future industrialization and commercialization.

The agreement relies on a joint investment of 11.5 million euro, spread over three years, and will utilize the high standard of internationally recognized research of both Institutions in their respective fields of science investigation in order to fabricate low cost devices targeted at disabled patients.

Both projects are technologically advanced and of great social impact:

The first project targets the development of a motorized exoskeleton to improve the mobility of paraplegic subjects (the exoskeleton is an external structure that can enhance the physical capabilities of the person who wears it and it can have crucial implications in medical and rehabilitative therapies). The clinical experience of INAIL and the scientific results obtained by IIT in humanoid robotic research with a focus on sensors, control and balance in locomotion (such as COMAN and iCub projects), are the starting point for the study of innovative new exoskeletons which are safe and customizable.

The second project is dedicated to the development of an advanced upper limb prosthetic system that includes the study of an innovative hand and wrist capable of interfacing with the latest technologies. The main goal is to design and build low cost devices for amputees which can be used to sustain both the Italian welfare system and patients. The devices must be easy to use, high performance and reliable compared to the several multi-articulated hands available on todays market.

The agreement signed today strengthens the collaboration between IIT and INAIL which started back in 2011 with a joint project on research and development of the rehabilitation technology for the ankle.

IIT-Skoltech: an agreement for future scientific collaborations

skoltech-logo-350pxRoberto Cingolani scientific director of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) and Mikhail Myagkov, vice president of Academic Affairs of Moscow Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), have signed on November 26th,in Trieste, within the Russia-Italy Business Forum, a nonbinding agreement to evaluate the feasibility of future scientific collaborations in crucial areas of research for both institutions such as life and biomedical sciences, energy science and information technology.

The signing of the agreement, which was attended by the President of the IIT, Gabriele Galateri, will be followed by visits and staff exchanges aimed to test the feasibility of joint initiatives in scientific research, in PhD students and Postdocs’ training and in technology transfer.

This is the first time that IIT signs an agreement with a Russian research institute. Although Skoltech has been founded just few years ago (2011), it has already proven its ability to attract the best students from Russia and it counts numerous collaborations with some of the most important international scientific institutions and universities. The agreement has been facilitated by a mutual knowledge between the two institutions: after working at IIT, some scientists have in fact moved to Moscow and covered important roles in Skoltech.
