Within "Junk DNA" the instructions at the basis of language development

Identified a novel control mechanism of foxp2 gene expression, a gene that makes our brain capable of formulating verbal expressions

In the past, it was thought that about 95% of DNA did not contain any information and, thus, this portion of DNA had been defined as "Junk" DNA. In contrast, scientific results have confirmed that it encodes for microRNAs and other types of RNAs, which are prime regulatory molecules that orchestrate complex gene networks. The research coordinated by Dr. Davide De Pietri Tonelli, at the Neuroscience and Brain Technologies (NBT) department of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Genoa, Italy), identified about 3.000 genes that are potentially regulated by microRNAs, and shows that two microRNAs regulate one of these genes, foxp2, that is known to control the development of organs, and brain areas involved in human verbal expression.
