Workshop “NMR DAY on Drug Discovery and Delivery New Approaches”

Over the past decades NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) has emerged as a powerful tool for academic and industrial pharmaceutical research. NMR has been successfully used in several fields such as drug discovery, drug delivery and diagnostics. The combination of NMR with Computational and other Biophysical methods holds a great potential for the development of new therapies for human diseases. The purpose of the workshop is to present some of the latest approaches in drug discovery and delivery both in academia and industry.

The workshop "NMR DAY on Drug Discovery and Delivery: New Approaches", organized by Marina Veronesi, Stefania Girotto and Luca Mollica, will be held at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Via Morego 30, Genova (Italy) on Friday, October 16th, 2015.

IIT si... illumina di meno!

L'Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, partecipa a M’illumino di meno 2015 spegnendo la sua insegna e incontrando a Palazzo Ducale, nel cuore della città, i ragazzi dei licei genovesi.

Antonio Iacchetti, fellow-PhD della facility IIT presso il politecnico di Milano ha raccontato ai ragazzi i risultati delle ricerche sui pannelli solari fotovoltaici stampabili, una avanguardia tecnologica che potrebbe cambiare le nostre abitudini energetiche.

Le peculiarità di questa nuova generazione di pannelli fotovoltaici, che possono essere stampati da una rotativa direttamente su un supporto plastico, è la loro capacità di convertire in energia elettrica non solo la luce solare, ma anche quella, più fioca, che proviene dalle comuni lampadine per interni. Una energia che normalmente viene perduta e che può essere così recuperata. 

I piccoli pannelli solari presentati come prototipo hanno mostrato di essere capaci di azionare piccoli dispositivi, quali led o motorini elettrici, o ancora sensori di temperatura e umidità. Il progresso della ricerca promette di renderli sempre più efficienti e adatti ad applicazioni più esigenti dal punto di vista dell’energia richiesta.

L’incontro si è svolto a consumo zero, ossia senza utilizzare energia elettrica, nella soffusa atmosfera della luce naturale e del “lume di candela”; in piena sintonia con il clima della festa del risparmio energetico promossa da Caterpillar, la trasmissione di Radio Radio 2 che, ogni anno, si impegna nel promuovere un futuro energetico sostenibile.

Festival of Science 2014

This year IIT participated at Festival of Science in Genoa with numerous events, from 24 October to 2 November 2014. There were three photo exhibitions on scientific research, including an excerpt from Beyond Science. La Scienza in uno scatto that was successfully hosted in the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa last winter; two workshops to explore the perception of time and the biological clock that influence our body life, and one to study the properties of graphene and other carbon nanomaterials. Several lectures were held by IIT scientists who linked the theme of Time, the main topic of the festival this year, to physical and biological phenomena such as light, memory, and nanotechnology. Moreover, during a special scientific caffé, ten IIT scientists presented the 2014-2015 program of “ IIT si racconta…”

 

iCUB meets the public at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa

iCub, the IIT humanoid robot, met the public on January 16th at the Doge's Palace, Hall of the Gran Consiglio, in Genoa. iCub was introduced to the public by Professor Giorgio Metta, iCub Facility’s Director, during the fourth round of the IIT’s Scientific Cafès "IIT si racconta", entitled "Building intelligence for humanoid robots". The talk, covered different aspects of the evolution of artificial intelligence in humanoid robots. In particular, Professor Metta demonstrated how nature has inspired the construction of some of the components of the intelligent humanoid robot iCub and explain how in order to build an artificial intelligence comparable to a human being it is crucial that the robot must have a human-like body. Many the questions asked by the public while the kids played with the little robot before and after Metta's talk.

The 2013/2014 Scientific Cafès are organized by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa with the group of Giovani Ascom - Confcommercio Genoa. This is third season of Scientific Cafés " IIT is racconta ," which started last October and will continue until June 2014.
